Silk is a natural textile made from the fibres of the cocoon of the Chinese silkworm which is spun into a smooth fabric prized for its softness, shimmering appearance, strength and many other qualities.
Silk fibre has a triangular prism-like structure, which allows silk to produce different colours. This is because silk cloth is able to refract incoming light at different angles.
There are two types of silk used for the production of silk fabric:
Mulberry Silk is produced by the Bombyx Mori caterpillar larvae feeding on white mulberry leaves, and Wild Silk, called Tussah Silk, from silkworms feeding on oak leaves.
Around four-fifths of the world's silk production consists of cultivated silk.
Strong yet delicate, absorbent but reflective, insulating and cooling, silk fabric possesses extraordinary, unique qualities.
Silk is hypoallergenic and it regulates body temperature.
Unlike many synthetic fibres, Silk has a smooth, soft texture that is not slippery.
Silk is one of the strongest natural fibres, but it loses up to 20% of its strength when wet.
Silk's absorbency makes it comfortable to wear in warm weather and while active. Its low conductivity keeps warm air close to the skin during cold weather.
Silk Fabrics that are often made from silk include charmeuse, habutai, chiffon, taffeta, crepe de chine, dupioni, noil, tussah, and shantung, among others.
Silk is durably worn and designed as clothing for every season.
